Great Ways That Can Help You Vent Alone

Venting is an important part of processing emotions and maintaining mental health. Here are some great ways to do it alone, for times when it might not be possible to talk to a friend or family member.

    1. Write Down Your Feelings
Writing is a great way to get your thoughts and feelings out on paper without worrying about judgement or being interrupted. Even if you don’t feel like writing a full-blown story, make a list of the things that are bothering you or write out your thoughts. Doing so can even help you to identify patterns and make sense of what you’re feeling.

    2. Get It Out Through Art
Creative outlets such as drawing, painting or making music are good for releasing frustration or sadness. Certain activities can be especially useful for overall self-care, such as doodling or coloring with markers can be a fun and easy way to unwind.

    3. Take a Walk
Heading outside for a walk can help clear your mind and offer some perspective. Whether you prefer to take a leisurely stroll or tackle a more challenging hike, the beauty of nature can soothe your tensions.

    4. Exercise
The endorphins released during physical activity – anything from jogging to yoga – can act as a great stress reliever. Even a five minute jog or stretching exercise can do wonders to your mood.

    5. Talk to Your Pet
It’s no surprise that animals are great company – and they don’t judge how you are feeling! Venting to your pet can actually make you feel heard, even though they obviously don’t understand.

    6. Meditate
Meditation encourages mindful awareness, which basically means to pay attention to the present moment without getting distracted by worries or being preoccupied by the future. If you are new to mediation, there are plenty of apps or videos available to get started.

    7. Take a Time Out
Sometimes the best way to vent is to just step away and give yourself a break. Create a safe room or designated area for this purpose, where you can go for some peace and quiet. This could involve anything from reading a book to listening to your favorite music.

    8. Vent Through Venting
Venting can be a great way to physically discharge all built-up emotions. Screaming into a pillow or hitting a punching bag may sound silly, but it can be a great way to release some anger or frustration.

    9. Talk to Yourself
It might sound silly but talking to yourself out loud can actually be incredibly helpful in trouble-shooting, getting perspective and even venting. Ask yourself questions out loud, such as “What am I really feeling right now?” or “What do I need right now?”

    10. Do Something Creative
Creative endeavors, such as baking or creating art, can be a productive way to channel your emotions. Doing something creative will give you a sense of accomplishment and can be incredibly therapeutic.

    11. Ease the Pain
Sometimes it is impossible to vent without some form of material pleasure. Whether you like taking a hot bath, treating yourself to some chocolate or listening to some soothing music, find something that helps you escape or unwind, even for a short period of time.

    12. Talk To a Mental Health Professional
Occasionally, venting alone may not be enough or could even be counter-productive. If your feelings are becoming overwhelming, speaking to a mental health professional is recommended and can offer a safe place to get together your emotions.

Venting alone is an important, private activity, helping to process our emotions, recognize patterns and uncover solutions. These twelve methods of venting are a great way to relieve the pressures of stress and maintain a healthy state of mind.
